Tips For Choosing An Office Desk

© By: Niall Roche

The desk you choose for your home office space is probably going to be the biggest piece of furniture in your entire home office. You may need your desk to perform a variety of tasks, so it is important that you choose it carefully. Most people don’t put very much thought into the selection of their office desk. In fact, you may be tempted yourself to head out to the nearest store and purchase the first desk that you see. Before you do that put some thought into what you need from your new desk.

The first thing that you must do is evaluate your needs. Do you simply need a desk to hold your computer, or will you need a space to layout multiple pages and other items? Look at how much office equipment you have. Do you have a computer, printer, fax, phone, photocopier, scanner and more? Or perhaps you simply have a laptop and nothing more? This will be the first major deciding factor - how much desk space do you actually need?

It is also important to look at the space where you will be putting your desk. Is your office large, and able to accommodate a large desk? Or do you need to squeeze into a tiny area? It is a good idea to take measurements before you go out shopping, because this will save you a lot of time in the long run. There’s nothing worse than buying a new piece of office furniture only to realize your office is too small for it to fit properly.

It can be very tempting to pick up a cheap desk from the local office supply store, however while these units are often inexpensive, they are usually made very cheaply and tend to break apart quickly. A design that works very well in a home office is a corner unit. These units tend to utilize every bit of space and even provide extra storage options which are useful when space is at a premium. These units can be expensive though, so you will need to weigh your options here carefully.

If you are looking for a large workspace, a good option is a large pine table. A large table will give you all of the workspace that you will need and you can use the back of the table by putting magazine racks or file folders along the back to increase organization space. Some people may not like the idea of working from a large table but whatever works best in your home office is what you should use.

The key to a successful home office is in the planning. It is never a benefit to have a nice looking desk that doesn’t help you in your overall goal to be productive. Plan ahead by having a workspace that is big enough to hold all of the electronics that you need at hand as well as organizing papers to keep from cluttering up your workspace, it will be very inconvenient to try and upgrade your desk later on so start as you intend to continue.
