Hair Loss in Women is More Common than Most Realize

© By: Keith Londrie

Hair loss in women is more common than ever before. Even though hair loss happens to every woman, it can be sped up in several ways. One of the most common causes of hair loss in women is hormonal changes. These changes can be brought about by pregnancy, menopause, or even coming off of birth control pills. Anything that may cause hormonal changes can cause hair loss in women. The different causes of hair loss each have varying degrees of hair loss.

The big difference between hair loss in women and hair loss in men is the pattern in which it happens. A man usually starts off with a receding hair line followed by the thinning of the hair. Over time, a man eventually loses everything.

The pattern of hair loss in women is slightly different. Even though it is common for hair loss in women and men to happen at the same age, it does not follow the same pattern. Women do not typically lose all of their hair like men. Hair loss in women is usually accompanied by gradual thinning, but almost never complete hair loss. This is easily noticeable over the years. Many women use wigs or similar items to hide the hair loss. My own mother used a wig to cover up the fact that her hair is thinning by quite a bit.

Hair loss in women can be combated with a product similar to Rogaine for men. It is called Propecia and has been clinically proven to help slow down hair loss. Propecia works by controlling the hormones that shrink hair follicles. Propecia for women has about the same success rate as Rogaine for men. This is a treatment worth considering if your professional concurs.

Just as in men, hair loss in women can also be combated by topical solutions and natural remedies. Though not as common, women may also receive hair transplantation surgery. Most of the time, surgery is not necessary in women as they do not lose all of their hair.

Hair loss in women can be treated. If you are experiencing this problem, it would be in your best interest to contact your family doctor or an experienced professional to get an initial assessment before you take action. The causes vary and you need the advice of a professional to determine if you need a particular treatment or maybe something as simple as a change in habits could be the cause.
