Aloe Vera: Benefits and Uses

Aloe Vera is a semi-tropical plant which looks more like a cactus and a member of lily family which usually grows in the African continent. It is a genus of plants belonging to the Asphodelaceae family, and is related to onions and asparagus.

There are literally hundreds of different varieties of aloe plants; however only a handful are considered to offer great nutritional value and potential health benefits. The water storage capacity of these plants is very impressive as they can almost double in size after a heavy rainfall period.

Aloe Vera has been used medicinally for over 6,000 years and is one of the most widely used substances in the world for the treatment of bruises and burns. Aloe plant and its derivative products have played a role in medicine and health care. The Aloe Vera contains a total of 80 essential ingredients including minerals, most vitamins including B12, amino acids, proteins and enzymes. Aloe vera is a plant that has wonderful healing and softening properties. An orange-yellow sap can be seen when a leaf of aloe vera is cut from the top.

Aloe has been reported to offer many health benefits including greater energy levels and endurance, improved immune function and better digestion. It is a very gentle substance in itself, so one of the benefits of Aloe Vera is that it can be used in sensitive areas, such as around the eyes.

Aloe is primarily consumed as a drink but it is used in many other commercial applications and it is a great skin moisturizer as well as useful in providing the scalp with nutrients and thus can help people with dandruff problems. It has been shown to be effective at reducing the levels of bad cholesterol, blood pressure and helping people with arthritis since it has powerful anti inflammatory properties. Aloe vera can also be used in many first aid kits since it has great antibacterial properties and it has also been used to make many bandages.
